The author skillfully mixes human interest aspects of lives of these extraordinary women with a rich background information about culture and history of Iran, a country that is generally little known in the US. Moreover, she provides extensive and very useful references and links to reliable, and mostly peer reviewed sources for curious readers who may want to further expand their understanding of current events and facts about the Middle East in general and Iran in particular. I am reading this book with my 8 yo daughter, and we are both enjoying it and learning so much! It is inspiring and captivating. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Bookish -- Truely Inspirational : This book is a great source of inspiration for young people to achieve high goals in life even when confronted with seemingly insurmountable obstacles. The women whose stories are covered in this book had to face many daunting challenges but at the end they proved that neither the sky nor space is the limit. Although they came from different backgrounds and pursued different goals, they proved that by dreaming big and imagining the unimaginable one could achieve high goals in life through hard work and resilience. The book also contains beautiful color illustrations and much useful information about the Iranian culture and festivities such as the celebration of the New Year also known as Nowruz. At a time when the societal focus is on implementing diversity and equality on a variety of fronts, "Roots in Iran" narrates the stories of fifteen inspiring women who achieved their true potential - and beyond - against all odds; five of the women and their journeys are described in detail and the others are short sketches, with their fields ranging from Engineering to Mathematics to Chess to Entrepreneurship... and into Space! The book is designed to be pithy and is mighty effective in distilling things to their essence. It is also illustrated in a colorful style, with Food for Thought, Discussion Guide, and Writing Tips, at the end, making it suitable also for use as a textbook in a School or Literature course setting. Overall, I recommend the book highly. It is uplifting, provides an indirect glimpse into Iran's culture and history, and underscores the triumph of human - woman - spirit in pursuit of excellence: Where There is a Will, There is a Way!! Reading about these women, their unique experiences and how they overcame obstacles was eye opening. This book should be in classrooms and home libraries. A great gift for the feminists in your life.
