  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from reader -- 5 stars : Interesting take on Lincoln. For some contemporary views of Lincoln you'll also want to read the following 99-cent historic ebooks: ( Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2017 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Harry Demeter -- Abysmal. Not even worth the low, low price. : Nowhere in the description of this product did I find any indication that it consisted of a SELECTION of Lincoln's speeches and letters, as well as anecdotes ABOUT Lincoln. There is no Table of Contents, no attribution of any of the documents to their source. The worst still, the SECOND INAUGURAL IS NOT PRESENTED IN ITS ENTIRETY! I'm uncertain whether to return the book or dump it in the trash, but I will be far more wary about accepting glowing Amazon reviews of books from here on. • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Joseph K. -- A ridiculous perversion and distortion : This book is some kind of a joke. Put together by someone who hates Lincoln, or else was working backward from a translation into a foreign language and trying to turn it back into English without really understanding the language, this book makes a mockery of Lincoln's speech. Here is a passage from a letter to John D. Johnston of 1851 (if there ever was such a letter, and this is not just a farcical invention that is): ( Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2021 )
  • from Ed Barton -- TOP 1000 REVIEWERVINE VOICE : Must Read ( 5.0 out of 5 stars )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from UnnoticedWriter -- Truth : This collection, critically read, can give you an insight into the man Lincoln. Note the context of situations. Where he must be a politician and work to be heard or effective, versus where he can express his true opinions. See the conflict between his great sense of duty to country and Constitution and his personal sense of what is truly write. Leave behind hero worship and see that a man, truly dedicated against slavery would, in modern context, be considered so far behind, and remember the historical context so you can see how much we should all examine what we so readily accept in our modern attitudes. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from ricardo -- This is a terrific book to enjoy over breakfast : This is a terrific book to enjoy over breakfast, a few chapters at a time. The author has a wonderful literary voice and each of the short anecdotes about the amazing man Lincoln is thoroughly entertaining and collectively the hundreds of situations recorded give some insight into what kind of person Lincoln was. His sense of humour, contrasted with his adherence to the principles of justice, suggest that his great reputation was well deserved. Not just for Americans. Ricardo Silverburn, children's author. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from LPatricks -- Just Lincoln with nothing added. And it is free. : I have read scores of biographies on Lincoln and in almost every case the author seems wrapped up in her/his opinion and interpretation of Lincoln. In fact, Lincoln needs no explanation from a third party: his own words carry more meaning than any author could add. This book is just Lincoln arranged in chronicle order without a word from anyone else. I love it. In particular his personal letters are masterful, e.g., to his freeloading brother-in-law. More than in his public speeches, his private letters reveal the quality of character that made Lincoln our most beloved President. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2013 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Lorena L. French -- A fine reference about our best president. : President Lincoln was maligned and scorned as much as is President Trump. Compared to both of them, politicians today haven't regard for country or countrymen. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Paresh -- To learn unbiased diplomacy : What an amazing collection, one wonders at the mind which penetrates a whole nation that can be singularly fighting the unwritten laws of human fair play ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 24, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from N Alvarez -- A historical record : Can't beat the 0.00 price. Good read for Lincoln enthusiasts. It's brilliant to read this in Kindle format. An excellent companion to  Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln . ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 30, 2014 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Scotia -- For those interested in American history : Useful background information for those interested in American history or Mr Lincoln in particular. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 9, 2016 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Diana Burgess -- Speeches and letters of Abraham Lincoln : Had just seen the great firm Abraham Lincoln and found the book to coincide perfectly with the character so ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 13, 2013 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Luke Miller -- True to its word : Unbelievable written English. And remarkable written. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 12, 2021 )
